Water Beads in Squishies: Why They’re Dangerous and What Canada Says

Are water bead squishies dangerous? Yes — and the reason is not the outside of the toy, but what is inside it. Water beads are small beads that absorb water and grow. If a child swallows one, it can keep expanding inside the body and block the bowel, causing a bowel obstruction that can be fatal. That single fact is why water-bead squishies were recalled in the United States in 2026, and why parents in Canada should treat any water-bead squishy as a toy to stop using, not a toy to use more carefully.

This article explains how water beads cause harm, what the 2026 recall covered, what the position is in Canada, and how to check the squishies you already own.

What Water Beads Do Inside the Body

A water bead starts small and hard, often no bigger than a pea. When it meets water, it absorbs it and swells to many times its original size. That is the property that makes water beads fun in a sensory bin or a vase, and it is the property that makes them dangerous when swallowed.

If a child swallows a water bead, the bead does not pass through the body in the same size it went in. It can keep absorbing fluid and growing as it moves through the gut, until it becomes large enough to block the bowel. A bowel obstruction can be fatal, and the danger is worse because the bead is small when swallowed, so a child may swallow one without an adult noticing.

The 2026 Recall: What Happened

On 2026-10-01, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of squishy toys filled with water beads. The recall covered about 37,000 pieces from ABC Trading, including the Squishy Dumpling model 3655 and the Crazy Squib Ball model 3984. The recall number is 27-006. It also covered about 480 pieces of the Mochi Malrang from LLK Trading, and the Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun from OKK Trading / Toyworld168, recalled for the same reason.

The recalled toys were semi-transparent with glitter and filled with water beads, and the dumpling version was sold in bamboo steamer packaging. The stated reason for the recall was the one described above: if a child swallows the water beads, the beads can expand and cause a bowel obstruction that can be fatal.

A new water-bead safety rule in the United States took effect in 2026, reflecting the same concern: water beads in children’s products are a serious hazard.

What About Canada?

Parents in Canada often ask whether there is a Canadian ban on water-bead squishies, or on squishy dumplings in particular. The honest answer is that there is no verified Canadian ban on baozi squishies that we can point to. We are not aware of a Canadian ban that covers these products, and this article will not claim that one exists.

What is verified is the American recall and the American safety rule described above. That is the evidence this article is based on, and it is enough to act on. The hazard does not change at the border. A water bead swallowed by a child in Windsor behaves the same way as a water bead swallowed by a child anywhere else, and the advice is the same in both countries: stop using water-bead squishies, and choose solid fill instead.

How to Check the Squishies in Your Home

Look at each squishy in good light and hold it up to see inside. Can you see small round beads inside? Is the toy semi-transparent with glitter, with beads visible through the skin? If so, stop using it. That is the pattern of the recalled products, and it is the pattern to treat as a warning sign in any squishy, whatever the seller.

Do not cut a squishy open to check what is inside. Cutting it open can spill the contents across the floor and create the very hazard you are trying to avoid. If you cannot tell what the filling is from the outside, and the packaging or the seller cannot tell you, stop using the toy. Uncertainty about the filling is itself a reason to put the toy aside.

Check the outside of each toy for splits, tears, thin spots, and seams that are starting to separate. A toy that is splitting should be taken away. If you find a torn water-bead squishy, pick up any beads you can see, keep children away until the floor is clear, and throw the toy away where children cannot reach it.

Check the packaging and any order record you still have. Does the product match the recalled models — Squishy Dumpling model 3655, Crazy Squib Ball model 3984, Mochi Malrang, or Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun? Was it sold in bamboo steamer packaging? If it matches, stop using it and contact the seller. The same applies to gifts or second-hand squishies with no packaging: use the look of the toy as your guide, and when in doubt, leave it out.

If a child has swallowed a water bead, or you think they may have, seek medical help right away. Do not wait for symptoms, and do not try to treat it at home. Tell the medical team that a water bead may have been swallowed.

Choosing a Safer Squishy

The alternative to a water-bead squishy is a solid-fill squishy. A solid-fill toy has no loose beads inside, and nothing inside it that grows when it meets water. If it tears, the damage is visible and the toy can be thrown out. That difference is the whole point of this article.

When you shop for a new squishy, ask what the filling is before you buy, choose a larger, one-piece toy for a younger child, and remember that most squishies are labelled 3+. Supervise younger children, check toys for tears, and remember: a squishy is a toy, not food, even when it is shaped like a dumpling.

At Squishopia, we only sell unbranded white-label squishies with solid filling. We do not sell water-bead products, and we do not sell squishies filled with loose beads of any kind. Water-bead toys appear in this article only as a safety warning. We do not recommend buying them, from us or from anyone else.
